Top 5 Tips for Homeowners
- 1. VERIFY INSURANCE
- 2. GET IT IN WRITING
- 3. CHECK REFERENCES
- 4. HOW LONG HAS THE COMPANY BEEN IN BUSINESS?
- 5. DON'T SIGN ANYTHING - UNTIL YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND AND AGREE.
Workers Compensation Insurance protects you if a worker is injured on your property. Liability Insurance protects you if any of your property is damaged. It's common to ask a contractor for their insurance agent to provide a certificate of insurance or to be an additional insured on a large project. (If their insurance is not up-to-date YOU could be liable.)
All warranties and estimates must be in detail. It will help protect you as a consumer and avoid misunderstandings.
Does the company stand behind warranties? Did the contractor listen to you when there was a problem? Do they actually show up on time? Would previous customers use them again? If they cannot provide references, there's a reason why!
Warranties are only as good as the company providing them. If they go out of business, in many cases so does your warranty.
Be sure to ask questions and clarify everything in writing. Taking time to ensure that you and the contractor have clear expectations will ensure a smooth and problem free project.
"The soffit is 3 feet wide around most of the house. A few pieces had fallen or were falling off and it was bulging down (sagging in the middle) in a few more places. I was looking for more than just replacing the fallen-off parts. After some discussion and investigation, Ryan, the carpenter, offered to install a furring strip for support all around the house. Ryan was just great. He was able to wash reuse much of the existing soffit. He alerted me to the anomalies that were revealed when he removed the existing soffit. He repaired vents and screened over the holes that had been sloppily left unscreened. The furring strip was not a constant height, he had to custom fit it. The plastic fence had been hit by a car. The exact pieces were not available, but Ryan did some kind of magic with plastic lumber and you can’t tell the difference. The ceiling plaster is absolutely fin."
